Welcome to Bandcamp Buyday! A brand new series on Sounds Good in which I (and perhaps others in future – that would be cool) discuss the purchases I’ve made on Bandcamp Friday. With the way the pandemic has dicked over the music industry, supporting artists seems to be more important than ever. Bandcamp has proven to be a guardian angel for artists, so I’d like to feature it more on the blog with this series. Should I have thought of this a year ago? Probably. Do I know it’s an awful pun? Absolutely.

Recently I tweeted out a request for artists to send over their newest releases on Bandcamp and was met with hundreds of replies. It was quite an eye-opening moment realising just how massive the industry is. I’d like to say thank you to everybody who responded. I’ll ensure to keep putting out these requests throughout the year to fit alongside Bandcamp Buyday. You can check out the tweet and all of the artists’ work here. Right, lets dive into the latest purchases for March 2021!

Hadda Be – ‘Another Life’ / Formerly known as Foundlings, Hadda Be’s re-debut ‘Another Life’ is a storming hit. Powerful guitars are cut with pummelling drums and sleek basslines to bring a bit of life to the ears. It is an addictive listen and offers what could be a superb new beginning for these guys.  


Peach Luffe – Bloom / Last year I raved about Peach Luffe’s Shimmer EP, so this was an easy purchase to make. I couldn’t get enough of the sugary sweet sound and new EP Bloom offers much more of the same. ‘Golden Parachutes’ is one of the best openers around. I feel transported into a world above the clouds that’s filled with rainbows and happiness as far as the eye can see. Bloom is beautiful.


Black Country, New Road – For the first time / This is the record that takes the crown for originality so far this year. Standing out far from the crowd is the debut album from Brixton’s Black Country, New Road. Comprised of six tracks that range from five to ten minutes and steeped in an unnerving bravado that utilises the inflections of jazz and the terror of post-punk, you wouldn’t be laughed at to believe it’s not the easiest of records to get into.

However, despite the minutes and not-mainstream traits, it rocks. ‘Instrumental’ feels like a villainous descent into hell with booming horns and terrorising rhythms. ‘Athens, France’ snaps into frame with a groove so deeply embedded, the next six minutes fly by. The same can be said for the rest of the record. It is a blast.


Black Dresses – Forever In Your Heart / This is one of the most abrasive listens I’ve had this year. Having split up after the release of Peaceful As Hell, Black Dresses came back with a vengeance with Forever In Your Heart. It tears up the traditional conventions of music and throws all kind of noise and anguish your way. From ear-piercing screams to blistering feedback, there’s such a good case to make for this record being unappealing. Yet within the harshness, there are grooves and rhythms that always have you coming back for more.


Tayls – ‘Scarlet Letter’ / Booming horns, massive guitars and passionate vocals – ‘Scarlet Letter’ has everything you could need from a pick-me-up. Oh boy, what a joy it is. It’s definitely going to remain one of my favourite singles of the year.


Purrses – Wrong Tide / Belgian band Purrses deliver four songs of pure vintage weirdness on Wrong Tide. It has specks of surf rock with psychedelic vibes laced through it, giving it a real jangly sound that could fall apart at any second. It’s superb and introduced me to a world of music I had previously not known before.
